Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in the sediment core from a schistosomiasis area with Na-PCP application in China

Abstract: Spatial and temporal distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was explored in the Dongting Lake area. The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs ranged from 15.4 to 38.9 pg I-TEQ g(-1) in surface sediments and 0.55 to 38.9 pg I-TEQ g(-1) for sediment core. The vertical distributions of PCDD/Fs in the sediment core reflected the past history of using Na-PCP and the impact of the massive flood events on the distribution of PCDD/Fs to some extent. The sediment still acts as significa… Show more

“…Generally, the results of this consecutive‐year monitoring suggested that PCP contamination in the studied foods from retail outlets in GD generally declined over the study years because of its restricted use in industry and prohibition in cultivation and aquaculture (Ge et al., 2007; Hong et al., 2005; Xiao et al., 2012; Zheng et al., 2011).…”

“…PCP and its sodium salt (Na‐PCP) are commonly used as bactericides, fungicides, herbicides, algaecides, defoliants, and wood preservatives (Ge et al., 2007; Gulcan et al., 2008; Hilton et al., 1970; Lamparski et al., 1978; Li et al., 2012; Piskorska‐Pliszczynska et al., 2016; Ryan et al., 1985; Tang et al., 2007; Xiao et al., 2012; Zheng et al., 2011; Zhou et al., 2017). In particular, they were extensively sprayed in the aquatic system in southern China from the early 1960s to the early 1990s to kill snails, which are the intermediate hosts of schistosomes, for schistosomiasis control (Hong et al., 2005; Tang et al., 2007; Xiao et al., 2012; Zheng et al., 2012; Zhou et al., 2017). Consequently, PCP and its derivatives have caused serious and extensive contamination of environmental media in China, especially the sediment, due to the lack of degradation in deposits.…”
