Polyazulenes Based Materials for Heavy Metal Ions Detection

Abstract: Azulene is a special monomer used to functionalize electrodes due to its high polarizability, because it makes possible spontaneous electron drift from the five-membered ring to the seven-membered ring. Our study concerns the electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse-voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry of a new azulene monomer, 4-(5-isopropyl-3,8-dimethylazulen-1-yl)-2,6-bis((E)-2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl) pyridine (L). It has been used to obtain complexing modified… Show more

“…The chemical synthesis of electroactive and partially soluble polyazulene was realized via the chemical oxidative polymerization of azulene with iodine and bromine [25], with FeCl 3 [26], or via the polymerization of 1,3-dibromoazulene with Ni(COD) 2 [27]. Electrochemical polymerization was also used with significant results [28,29]. The electronic and structural properties of azulene-based polymers [30] and their optoelectronic and energy applications [31] were carefully investigated.…”

“…These values are listed in Table 3 for oxygen and sulfur derivatives. The data were collected in 0.5 mM solutions of each ligand in 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in acetonitrile [3][4][5]21,22]. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies (Table 1) were plotted against experimental oxidation and reduction potentials.…”

“…A good result has been observed for Pb (detection limit of 10 −7 M) [4]. The electrochemical study of ligand established the best conditions for obtaining CMEs, which were tested for the recognition of HMs cations with good results for lead and for copper at concentrations lower than 10 −8 M [3]. Modified electrodes based on O3 and S3 ligands have been recently reported for HMs ions recognition [21,22].…”

“…To develop new sensors for HMs ions, 2,6-bis((E)-2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)-4-(5-isopropyl-3,8-dimethylazulen-1-yl) pyridine (L) has been synthesized [18] and characterized [19] by electrochemical techniques. The aim of the present paper is the study of complexing L-CMEs preparation in view of HM ions (Cd, Pb, Cu, Hg) detection.…”
