In this research study, the cross-linked cerium (IV)-alginate complex, as coordination biopolymeric compound in the granules form, was prepared. It has been indicated from the x-ray diffraction patterns that the nature of alginate complex is amorphous. Additionally, it has been revealed from the infrared absorption spectra that cerium (IV) chelates the alginate macromolecular chains in the complex. The study has displayed that the range of  s OCO-is 1424 cm -1 and the range of  a s OCO-is 1605 cm -1. This indicates that a complexation type between the cation Ce 4+ and both carboxylate and hydroxyl functional groups of alginate macromolecule is usually takes place. The study has also measured the electrical conductivity () of coordination biopolymeric cerium (IV)-alginate complex, as function of temperature. It has been indicated from the measured value of the electrical conductivity, i.e., 1.04 x10-9 Siemens at 20 o C that the conductance of the complex lies in the range of semiconductors. The research has profoundly discussed with evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters. Afterwards, appropriate conduction mechanism based on the electrical conductivity and chemical equilibrium has also been suggested and discussed in terms of the complex stability in correlation with its coordination geometry.

Cellulose fabric samples were carboxymethylated for different duration. The degree of substitution was changing through a maximum value during the reaction time.The equilibrium sorption of a cationic dye by cellulosic fibers of different degrees of carboxymethylation was investigated in buffered and in unbuffered systems. The sorption isotherms were interpreted by two kinds of approximations based upon Langmuir isotherm. From the sorption data extrapolated to zero dye concentration aff'mities were calculated. The temperature dependence of affinities gave the values of heat and entropy of dyeing which were changing along the reaction time similarly to the degree of substitution.

Thermodynamic parameters have been determined for the ion exchange of inorganic cations with sodium ions on cellulosic polyanions which contain carboxyl, carboxymethyl, phosphate, or sulphate groups. These polyanions show similar properties to both ion-exchange resins and biological polyelectrolytes with respect to their ion-binding character istics. Thus both cellulose sulphate (—SO2-) and cellulose phosphate (=PO2 -) bind potassium ions in preference to sodium ions, whereas with oxycellulose (—COO-) and carboxymethylcellulose (—CH2COO -) the order is reversed. The order of binding for copper(II) ions when exchanged for sodium ions is carboxymethyl > carboxyl > sulphate. For binding to carboxymethyl groups, the order of binding for divalent ions is Cu2+ > Mn2+ > Ca2+, but at sulphate groups the order is Mn2+ > Ca2+ > Cu2+. This behavior is here explained on the basis of two postulates: (1) that the ions are bound in the hydrated form to -SO2- and = PO2- groups, and (2) that at -CH 3COO- and —COO- groups the effective radii of the ions are in order of their crystal radii. The cause of this difference in behavior is held to be the effective radius of the anionic group. A theory of ion-exchange selectivity is advanced which gives quantitative expression to these ideas and allows calculation of free-energy changes that are in good agreement with the experimental values.
