Polyamine levels in the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa

Abstract: The levels of the polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine were analysed in different tissues of nature-collected samples of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa. The highest accumulation of polyamines was found in the apical section of the rhizome. The putrescine/spermine ratio was highest in the senescent tissue of the leaf.

“…The present results (Table 1) show the presence of Put, Spd and Spm in the marine algae studied. These results add to previous reports on the presence of PAs in other macroalgal species (Badini et al 1994, Lee 1998) and our recent results for the marine seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Marián et al 2000). In all cases, the concentrations were within the range commonly found for PAs in higher plants (Harkess et al 1992, Biondi et al 1993.…”

“…As in higher plants PAs have been shown to be involved in algal cell growth, cell division and the maturation of reproductive structures (Marian et al 2000;Theiss et al 2002;Guzman-Uriostegui et al 2002;Sacramento et al 2004). The importance of PAs in the membranes of photosynthetic complexes has also been demonstrated in unicellular alga (Beigbeder et al 1995;Doernemann et al 1996;Sfichi et al 2004;Sfichi-Duke et al 2008).…”

“…In algae, there are data on the endogenous levels of polyamines in several green, red and brown algae (Badini et al 1994;Marián et al 2000a). These polyamines are involved in cell division (Cohen et al 1984;García-Jiménez et al 1998;Marián et al 2000b;Voigt et al 2000;Theiss et al 2002), and in response to hyposaline stress (Lee 1998;García-Jiménez et al 2007).…”
