Poly(vinyl alcohol)/ZIF‐8‐NH2 mixed matrix membranes for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation

Abstract: Ethanediamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 particles ) is synthesized and incorporated in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to fabricate novel PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 MMMs exhibit enhanced membrane homogeneity and separation performance because of the higher hydrophilicity and restricted agglomeration of the particles, as compared to corresponding MMMs loaded with unmodified particles. The effect of ZIF-8-N… Show more

“…When GO addition exceed 2.0 wt%, the decrease in the separation factor may be due to the saturation limit of the GO load, and higher than this concentration cause agglomeration of GO, causing defects in the membrane. [40][41][42] The GOP-2.0 membrane is the best selection for further study, due to excellent separation factor and suitable ux. Fig.…”

“…Thus exploring the strategies for breaking the trade‐off effects is crucial for the fabrication of high‐performance PV membranes. Zhang and Wang modified ZIF‐8 particles with ethanediamine (EDA) and then incorporated them into PVA matrix for PV of 85 wt% ethanol, demonstrating improved separation performance due to enhanced hydrophilicity of ZIF‐8 and strong affinity to the PVA matrix. “…Finally, the incorporation of ZIF‐7–NH 2 fillers simultaneously makes the neat polymer more permeable and more selective, surpassing the state‐of‐the‐art 2008 Robeson upper bound. The same strategy can be applied to other MOFs, such as ZIF‐8–NH 2 , UiO‐66–NH 2 ,[64b] and MIL‐53–NH 2 , to further improve the polymer–filler interfacial compatibility in MMMs.…”
