Poly(lactic acid)/halloysite nanotubes nanocomposites: Structure, thermal, and mechanical properties as a function of halloysite treatment

Abstract: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/halloysite nanotubes (HNT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion using a masterbatch dilution process. Effect of addition of both unmodified halloysites (HNT) and quaternary ammonium salt treated halloysites (m-HNT) was investigated at different nanofiller contents. A homogeneous distribution/dispersion of halloysites in the PLA matrix is obtained for both unmodified and modified nanotubes within the studied composition range. The nucleating effect of halloysites, resulting in … Show more

“…As the shear rate in the hot pressing are extremely low compared to injection molding, the mechanical properties observed in the films can be related to the random orientation of the HNT into the PLLA matrix. In one of the references cited above 10 , the results also showed a slight reduction in SB of composites when increasing the nano filler content. The addition of both TiO 2 and HNT did not presented a positive effect on the mechanical properties of composites.…”

“…The mechanical properties of PCL 16 , PLGA nanofibers 17,18 and EPDM [19][20][21] also improved by the addition of HNTs. HNTs-PLA bionanocomposites have better properties with HNTs contents 22,23 . The degree of dispersion of HNTs showed the final properties of composites.…”
