The present study deals with the biosorption of As(III) from aqueous solution using mango leaves powder (MLP) and rice husk (RH) in a batch operation. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transformation infrared spectrometry analysis shows the surface texture of biosorbents and metal binding of functional groups of before and after biosorption of As(III). The optimum pH was obtained at 7 and 6 with 7 and 6 g/l of dosage of MLP and RH, respectively. The adsorption of As(III) onto MLP and RH was favourably influenced by an increase in temperature. Equilibrium data were well represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. Nitric acid and ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid was found to be a better eluant for the desorption followed by hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide of As(III) with a maximum desorption efficiency of 69.5, 48.5 and 79.4, 86.3 %, respectively. The pseudosecond-order kinetic model was found to best fitted of the experimental data over the equilibrium time at 32 h. The positive values of heat of adsorption (23.89 kJ/mol for MLP and 52.26 kJ/mol for RH) indicate the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The thermodynamic study showed the spontaneous nature of the sorption of As(III) onto MLP and RH.

A series of adsorption studies was carried out on a glycidyl methacrylate-modified cellulose material functionalised with imidazole (Cellulose-g-GMA-Imidazole) to assess its capacity in the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution. The study sought to establish the effect of a number of parameters on the removal of Ni(II) from solution by the Cellulose-g-GMA-Imidazole. In particular, the influence of initial metal concentration, contact time, solution temperature and pH were assessed. The studies indicated a Ni(II) uptake on the Celluloseg-GMA-Imidazole sorbent of approximately 48 mg g −1 of nickel from aqueous solution. The adsorption process fitted the Langmuir model of adsorption and the binding process was mildly endothermic. The kinetics of the adsorption process indicated that nickel uptake occurred within 400 min and that pseudo-second order kinetics best describe the overall adsorption process. Nickel(II) adsorption, recovery and re-adsorption studies indicated that at highly acidic pH values the adsorbent material becomes unstable, but in the range pH 3-6, the adsorbent is stable and shows limited but significant Ni(II) recovery and re-adsorption capability.

Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was synthesized and chemically modified with hydroquinone (HQ) applying the reaction conditions of Minisci. A degree of modification of as high as 32 % was obtained under optimal conditions: temperature of 70-80°C, time of 5 h, and [p-benzoquinone]/[acrylic acid)] ratio of 1.25. The synthesized PAA and its modified form HQ-PAA were characterized by UV-visible, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, 13 C NMR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and size exclusion chromatography. The study of copper (II) adsorption by the cross-linked PAA and HQ-PAA resins was undertaken, varying the following parameters: pH, time, temperature, ionic strength, sorbent mass, and initial copper (II) concentration. Optimal copper sorption extents of 5.5 and 20 mg g -1 for PAA and HQ-PAA resins, respectively, were found under the following conditions: a pH of 5.4, a time of 3 h, a temperature of 45°C, and an ionic strength of 0. Sorbent resins were achieved by cross-linking poly(acrylic acid) and its modified one through an oxidative decarboxylation process.
