“…However, the role of introgression as a diversifying mechanism in Penstemon has most often been discussed in the context of pollen‐mediated gene flow, particularly between hymenopteran‐ and hummingbird‐pollinated species. There are several hypotheses involving hybridization between hymenopteran‐ and hummingbird‐pollinated species that have subsequently been supported with molecular evidence (e.g., Straw, 1955, 1956a, 1956b; Crosswhite, 1967; Wolfe et al, 1998a, 1998b; Crump et al, 2020), and much research has been done on the genetic basis of transitions to hummingbird pollination (e.g., Wessinger and Rausher, 2014; Wessinger et al, 2014) and the differentiation of pollination traits in Penstemon (e.g., Wilson and Jordan, 2009; Katzer et al, 2019; Cardona et al, 2020). In this light, assessing the role of hybridization as a diversification mechanism in the absence of hummingbird pollination may help illuminate other processes that are integral to understanding speciation in Penstemon .…”
