Political risk, internal versus global value chain knowledge, and subsidiary operational integration

Abstract: Research summaryThis study combines transaction cost economics and network learning literature to examine the moderating effect of knowledge from internal versus external local supplier on subsidiary‐level intrafirm trade within multinational enterprises' (MNEs) global value chain networks. We conceptualize knowledge in a multidimensional way, disentangling it into institutional knowledge in high‐risk countries and internationalization knowledge in all countries. Empirical results from 5,660 observations of 48… Show more

“…At the same time, the enterprise itself has clearly defined boundaries and is a source of income through efficient selection and allocation of resources. Meanwhile, the relationship is limited to bi-directionality (Frynas et al 2017;Lee et al 2020). “…This model of a monolithic organization structure is formed by the aforementioned types of relations, and the enterprise itself has clearly defined boundaries and is a source of income through efficient selection and allocation of resources. Meanwhile, enterprise relationships are limited to bi-directionality (Frynas et al 2017;Lee et al 2020).…”

“…Accounting for the nested structure of data is important to avoid underestimation of the standard errors (Rabe‐Hesketh & Skrondal, 2008). Taking account of all these features, we employed a random‐intercept multilevel Tobit model using the metobit function in Stata v.15 (Lee et al, 2020; StataCorp., 2017).…”

“…This is because they have abundant internationalization experience, facilitating their production of intermediate goods to sell to GVC members. As a result, they are more dependent on internal value chains than on GVCs for their purchases of intermediate goods to enhance their operational flexibility and efficiency (Kano et al, 2020;Lanz & Miroudot, 2011;Lee et al, 2020;Lee, Shin, & Lee, 2015). In addition, an MNE that operates in many host countries is expected to have greater scope for both headquarters' divisions and foreign subsidiaries to engage in value-creating and value-capturing activities.…”
