Governance for complex problem solving has been increasingly discussed in environmental sustainability research. Above all, researchers continuously observe that sustainability problems are complex or "wicked", and suggest participatory models to address these problems in practice. In order to add to this debate, this study suggests a more differentiated theoretical approach to define governance for complex environmental problem solving than in previous studies. The approach consists of two vital steps: First, we operationalize complexity and define management strategies for solving environmental sustainability problems based on findings from psychology research. Second, we identify governance strategies that facilitate these management strategies. Linking those strategies suggests that the role of diverse institutions, actors, and interactions differs for five key dimensions of complexity: goals, variables, dynamics, interconnections, and informational uncertainty. The results strengthen systematic analyses of environmental sustainability problems in both theory and practice.

Junto a otras predisposiciones básicas, el nivel de conocimiento político que los ciudadanos poseen es un elemento central en el proceso de formación y entrega de opiniones políticas. Pese a la relevancia que el conocimiento tiene, no existía investigación en Chile que permitiera medir y caracterizar los niveles de conocimiento de los chilenos y de los factores asociados a mayor o menor conocimiento. Se utilizaron 2 encuestas nacionales realizadas con muestreo probabilítico por el Centro de Estudios Públicos en 2010 a personas de 18 años y más (N = 1.495) y 2011 (N = 1.554) para medir los niveles de conocimiento y sus determinantes. A través de análisis de correlación y regresión lineal, los resultados muestran que, acorde con resultados obtenidos en la investigación comparada, los niveles de conocimiento político en Chile son en promedio bajos y que existe una gran desigualdad en la distribución de ese conocimiento. Los principales factores que determinan niveles variados de conocimiento en Chile son educación, edad, consumo de medios y frecuencia de conversaciones políticas. Despite the relevance of such knowledge, no studies have been carried out in Chile to measure and describe Chileans' political knowledge and the factors associated with higher or lower knowledge levels. Two national surveys conducted by the Centro de Estudios Públicos in 2010 (N = 1,495) and 2011 (N = 1,554), which employed probability sampling and included respondents aged 18 and older, were used to inquire into knowledge levels and their determinants. After conducting linear correlation and regression analyses, and consistently with the literature reviewed, results show that levels of political knowledge in Chile are low on average and that such knowledge is very unequally distributed. The main factors that determine variations in knowledge levels in Chile are education, age, media consumption, and frequency of political conversations. Global value perceptions: The legitimising functions of western representations of democracy

This paper argues that a fundamental antagonism between democracy and nondemocracy organises lay thinking on global issues. We review key findings of a long‐standing experimental research programme that examined the “Democracy‐as‐value” hypothesis across a variety of political and social contexts. This hypothesis contends that democracy is an ideological belief system that provides value to democratic individuals, groups, and institutions and thereby grants legitimacy to their actions. Based on procedural justice theories and social representations theory, we contend that western lay perceivers associate democracy with procedural equality and individual autonomy, whereas nondemocracy is associated with ingroup hierarchy and conformity. We discuss how idealised representations of democracy justify global power arrangements and emphasise the paradoxical justification function of democratic values through which nondemocratic forms of social regulation based on physical force are legitimised with the very democratic norms that call for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
