Based on a library research, this paper aims at introducing the police procedural as a subgenre of detective genre. To achieve the aim, this paper elaborately discusses three definitions of the police procedural. The discussion shows that experts have apparently provided a working definition of the police procedural after having identified how the new variant is different from, and yet the same as the “parent” genre. While the third definition discussed puts emphasis on the authentic and realistic aspects of the police procedural, the first two definitions can be used as a reference to elaborately discuss the police procedural as a variant or subgenre of the detective genre. The police procedural retains the basic conventional elements of the detective genre—plot and motifs, character, setting, theme, and props, but it twists these elements and turn them into inventions to keep the interest of the readers and viewers. Having established itself as a subgenre, the police procedural grows to become formulaic by creating its own conventions. It is a formula that is generally employed by writers and has come to be expected by readers or viewers. By doing so, the police procedural has helped the detective genre as its “parents” genre stay popular.

This paper shows the results of a study that analysed how the Spanish TV series Hospital Central (Telecinco: 2000 RESUMENEn el presente artículo se muestran los resultados de una investigación en la que se ha analizado la serie de ficción española Hospital Central (Telecinco: 2000-2012) para conocer qué imagen ofrece de las enfermedades: cuáles aparecen representadas y cuál es el perfil de los personajes que las sufren. El método utilizado en la investigación fue el análisis de contenido sobre una muestra de 43 capítulos y 256 personajes. Se concluye que ni las enfermedades que aparecen representadas ni el perfil de los personajes enfermos en la serie (edad, sexo, procedencia geográfica, etc.) se corresponden totalmente con los datos de incidencia estadística del periodo y lugar de emisión. RESUMONo presente artigo mostram-se os resultados de uma investigação em que se analisou a série de ficção espanhola Hospital Central (Telecinco: 2000(Telecinco: -2012 com o objetivo de conhecer que imagens são oferecidas das enfermidades: quais aparecem representadas e qual é o perfil dos personagens enfermos. O método utilizado nesta investigação foi o da análise de conteúdo sobre uma mostra de 43 capítulos e 256 personagens. Hot Shot: gendered signifiers and the depiction of women in a Taiwanese sport idol television drama

This article explores the depiction of female characters and the gendered signifiers that are presented in Hot Shot, a sports-themed television drama featuring a cast of popular Taiwanese idols or icons whose stories centre on basketball and the connections between sport, dreams, love and friendship. In order to understand the function and value of female characters in Hot Shot, Chatman's (1978) narrative structure was deployed as the analytical framework to deconstruct plots and settings. In addition, an adapted version of Propp's (1968) classification of the actions of characters was used. The findings revealed that the plots of Hot Shot were focused on competition, training and success, and the settings were mostly basketball courts and tournaments. Although female characters involved in these settings were associated with competition and training, they were marginalized in supportive roles. Moreover, strategies of representing women in Hot Shot, including disparagement of athletic ability to emphasize femininity and feminine body image, highlighted the female characters' subordinate roles. Finally, in relation to gender-appropriateness, stereotypes drawn from male sport were pervasive in Hot Shot, resulting in a gendered discourse permeating the text.
