Polarization-resolved terahertz imaging of intra- and inter-laminar damages in hybrid fiber-reinforced composite laminate subject to low-velocity impact

Abstract: Terahertz imaging is applied to characterize a hybrid fiber-reinforced composite laminate subject to low-velocity impact in this study. The hybrid fiberreinforced composite laminate comprises unidirectional glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy plies with a cross-ply stack pattern. Both impact-induced intraand inter-laminar damages are successfully detected, and the damage evolution throughout the thickness is also evaluated. The interaction between the terahertz polarization and carbon-fiber orientation is investigate… Show more

“…Hybridization provides new opportunities to broaden the applicability and improve the properties of composite materials, especially in high-end applications [3,7]. Hence, hybrid composites can provide a high stiffness and strength, improve the impact and fatigue resistance, provide high fracture toughness, and simultaneously cut the weight and/or total cost [66,67].…”

“…Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a powerful tool for characterizing the internal optical responses of optically opaque polymer-based materials11121314151617181920212223242526. Because the photon energy of terahertz waves is relatively small in comparison to that of visible light, they possess high transmittance, which enables us to access the internal states of opaque polymeric materials.…”

“…Although carbon fibers hinder the THz penetration, the interaction between the THz polarization and carbon fiber orientation can be utilized to extract detailed information which cannot be obtained by other NDE techniques. In our previous work [14], polarization-resolved THz imaging has been successfully applied to a hybrid fiber-reinforced composite laminate containing glass-fibers/ epoxy and carbon-fibers/epoxy plies with a cross-ply stack pattern. Impact-induced inter-ply damage at the interface and intra-ply damage close to the same interface can be differentiated by taking advantage of the sensitivity of THz polarization to the anisotropic conductivity of unidirectional carbon fibers.…”
