Polarization dependence of resonant multiphoton ionizations on ¹S₀ and ^1,3D₂ states in atomic mercury

Abstract

The polarization dependences of some resonant multiphoton ionizations in atomic mercury have been measured with a broadband (bandwidth =1.5 crn-') multimode dye laser at moderate light intensities ( = 5 0 0~~. c m -' ) .The multiphoton processes studied were the absorption of four photons to a resonant 'So, ID?, or 'Dl level by one-photon ionization. Complete saturation of the one-photon ionization step results in the ionization of all atoms excited to the resonant level. Because of the saturation of the ionization step, the polarization dependence of the four-photon excitation to the resonant level is measured. The theory developed by Dalby et al. is shown to give good agreement with the experiment when it is used to calculate the polarization dependence of the multiphoton transition to the resonant level. For the 6 d IDz resonance, distortions in the polarization dependence and an unusual linewidth dependence on the light polarization were observed. We relate these observations to the alternating current Stark effect and to the production of the third harmonic of the laser light in the focal volume.L'effet de la polarisation sur certaines ionisations multiphotoniques resonantes dans le mercure atornique a t t t mCsurt en utilisant un laser a colorant multirnode ?I bande large (largeur de bande =1,5 cm-I), avec des intensitts lumineuses (-500 MW .cm-'). La saturation complete de cette dernikre Ctape a cornrne resultat I'ionisation de tous les atomes excitCs au niveau rCsonant, ce qui fait que la dCpendance de la polarisation mesurCe est celle de I'excitation du niveau rtsonant par I'absorption de quatre photons. On montre que la thCorie dCveloppCe par Dalby et al. donne un bon accord avec l'exptrience quand on I'utilise pour calculer I'effet de la polarisation sur I'excitation du niveau rCsonant par quatre photons. Pour la rtsonance 6 d ID' , on a observt des distorsions dans la dCpendance de la polarisation, ainsi qu'un effet ~nhabituel de la polarisation de la lumikre sur la largeur de raie. Nous relions ces observations a I'effet Stark en champ alternatif et ?I la production de la troisikme harmonique du rayonnement laser dans le volume focal.[Traduit par la revue]Can.
