Point-of-use detection of ascorbic acid using a spectrometric smartphone-based system

Abstract: A rapid and portable analytical methodology has been developed for ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) quantification from aqueous samples using a spectrometric smartphone-based system for the first time. The method employs point-of-use approaches both for sample preparation and sample measurement, demonstrating the capability for mobile quality control of pharmaceutical and food products. Our approach utilizes an oxidation-reduction reaction between ascorbic acid and methylene blue, followed by a dispersive liquid-liqu… Show more

“…When UA is detected electrochemically, having AA and DA similar to the oxidation potential of UA may lead to false positive signals for UA detection. Meanwhile, AA and DA are also very important to human beings: AA is a kind of antioxidants, the lack of AA can cause bleeding or even paralysis; DA is a very important neurotransmitters which is associated with Parkinson's disease and some other neurological illnesses . Therefore, manufacturing an electrochemical biosensor for sensitive detection of AA, DA and UA at the same time can maximize the performance of the prepared electrochemical biosensor.…”

“…Simplification of analytical instruments and procedures enables their potential exploitation directly by non-trained users or outside the well-equipped laboratory. Recently smartphones have been used e.g., for colorimetric detection of nitrite [8], spectrometric detection of ascorbic acid [9] or colorimetric assay of uric acid and glucose [10]. Several review papers summarizing smartphone based bioanalytical and diagnosis applications have been published recently [11, 12, 13].…”

“…At present, most quanti cation of vitamin B12 are conducted using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [9], enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) [10], chemiluminescence [11], liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) [12], capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical methods [7,13]. Generally, these laboratory-based methods are expensive both in reagent and services and requires professionally trained operators [14]. Also, another limitation of laboratory-based methods is their time-consuming properties, which leads to factory production line wait for several hours for the test results in order to release the high-quality products.…”
