“…It is a plant resin that causes an inflammatory tissue reaction, which leads to keratinocyte necrosis (8) and attenuation of cells in mitosis (9). It has a shelf life of at least 3 months, but active ingredient concentrations begin to vary as the preparation ages (10). Podophyllin is applied in the physician's office directly to the lesion as a 10–25% solution, washed off 1–4 h later, and repeated once per week for 4–6 weeks.…”

“…Podophyllin is moderately effective in the treatment of EGWs, but recurrence rates are highly variable (Table 1). In randomized controlled trials, podophyllin monotherapy yields clearance rates of 41–77% and recurrence rates of 25–70% (10–18). Podophyllin therapy is associated with local skin reactions, such as erythema, tenderness, pruitis, burning, edema, and pain (19), and since podophyllin is absorbed into the body, its use should be limited to small treatment areas (4–10 cm 2 ).…”

“…Penile warts can be safely treated with 0.5-2.0% podophyllin self applied by the patient at a fraction of the cost of commercially available podophyllotoxin. The shelf life of podophyllin extract is at least 3 months, this is relevant for countries where resources for health care are limited (White et al, 1997). A mixture of natural and semisynthetic glycosides from Podophyllum hexandrum has been used for many years for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis but it shows gastrointestinal side effects.…”
