Biochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of extracts from Podophyllum hexandrum rhizome

Abstract: BackgroundPodophyllum hexandrum Royle (P. hexandrum) is a perennial herb and widely used in clinic. The present study was designed to separate and identify the biochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of extracts from P. hexandrum rhizome.MethodsThe ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts from P. hexandrum rhizome were analyzed by GC-MS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry), and the antioxidant capacity of the extracts and the components was tested by using the DPPH (2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl) and FRAP (… Show more

“…Trace DSQ GC-MS from American Finnigan Company was used. The GC and MS conditions were described by the literature (Li et al, 2012) with slightly modification, and the specific steps as follows. 1N NOWAX quartz capillary column: 30 m × 0.32 cm × 0.25 mm; column temperature: 50-190 • C; procedure temperature: 5 • C/min; carrier gas: He; vaporizer temperature: 280 • C; the MS conditions were: Ion source: EI; temperature: 200 • C; ionizing voltage: 70 eV; electric current of collection: 300 A; electric current of emission: 1 mA; resolution: 500; mass: 10-500.…”

“…The measurement was described by the literature (Benzie and Strain, 1996;Li et al, 2012), and the specific steps as follows. The 300 L FRAP reagent [prepared ex tempore by mixing 10 volumes of 300 mmol/L acetate buffer, pH 3.6, with 10 mmol/L TPTZ in 40 mmol/L HCl, and 20 mmol/L FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O at 10:1:1 (v/v/v)] and the 10 l standard samples (FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O, 500 M) or test samples of H 2 O, ethanol and ethyl acetate in section 2.2 (10 mg/mL 80% methanol) were mixed.…”
