POD & MLSM Application on DU96-W180 Wind Turbine Airfoil

Abstract: In this study, the aim was to reduce the complexity of the costly non-linear unsteady partial differential equations governing the aerodynamic flows into a simpler lower-dimensional model. Modal decomposition method; namely Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) was applied in conjunction with the Modified Linear Stochastic Measurement (MLSM) to achieve a reduced order model with high accuracy and low computational cost. The methods were applied to the surface pressure values of a DU96-W180 Wind Turbine Airfoil… Show more

“…The inflow wind speed is fixed at 11.4 m/s, and rotor starts spinning at 0 rad/s and 4 rad/s. Figure 14 shows the comparison of the rotation rate obtained from the reduced-order model to that obtained from the CFD simulations performed by Bazilevs [7]. For both cases (shown in Figure 14), the proposed ROM shows good agreement in CFD simulation.…”

“…The attractiveness of the POD method lies in the fact that it is a linear procedure and efficient in the design of robust feedback controllers leading to bettercontrolled airflow over aerofoils. Afterwards, much computational and experimental work has been performed by using this method to validate its effectiveness [6][7][8].…”
