“…Ground monitoring for crown inspections by means of binoculars is of crucial importance for the first detection of infested trees, enabling to locate signs of the beetle activity on a tree in the upper part of the canopy, including oviposition sites, frass material and exit holes (EPPO 2013). Nevertheless, detection from the ground is not always accurate or feasible (Meng et al 2015;Milius 1999;Smith et al 2009; USDA 2013), making it necessary to use tree climbers or hydraulic lifts inspections.…”

“…The infested zone was included in the territory of six municipalities (Cornuda, Pederobba, Crocetta del Montello, Maser, Montebelluna and Caerano di San Marco). Then, a "buffer zone" was established with a radius of 2 km around the infested zone, i.e., around the most external infested trees, according to European regulations [34]. Year-by-year, when new infested trees were found, the delimited zones (infested and buffer zones) were officially extended (or restricted) several times, coming to also include the bordering municipalities where satellite infestations have been discovered since 2010.…”

“…Immediately after the discovery of the pest, a large-scale intensive monitoring and eradication program started. The eradication program was based on the establishment of buffer zones, visual inspections, felling and destruction of infested trees, trapping protocols, and citizen alerts, following the official guidelines issued by EPPO [34]. The A. glabripennis population of Cornuda was declared eradicated in 2020 [35], after 11 years of application of specific control measures.…”

“…A pest risk assessment had already been done for that species and thus response actions were able to be implemented rapidly. As a number of populations of Asian longhorned beetle have been successfully eradicated around the world (e.g., EPPO, 2013;Trotter et al, 2019) and the negative impact of this pest on the Canadian economy would be significant (Anonymous, 2008), it was clear to the CFIA that eradication should be attempted to protect Canada's plant resources and maintain pest-free status (IPPC Secretariat, 2021b) which is important for trade.…”
