The Klutlan Glacier is a valley glacier 82-km long emerging from the Icefield Ranges of the St. Elias Mountains. It is one of at least 200 surging glaciers identified in western North America. During about the past 1200 yr, the glacier has deposited at its terminus a series of at least 7 surge-related Neoglacial ice-cored moraines. Lithologic characteristics of the Klutlan moraines suggest that they have resulted principally from the surging of the tributary Nesham Glacier, which periodically injects a lobe of medial and lateral moraines and the underlying ice into a more slowly moving Klutlan ice stream. Subsequent surges of the main ice carry the Nesham surge lobes to the Klutlan terminus as discrete geomorphic features. For the past 400 yr a Nesham lobe has reached the Klutlan terminus at approximately 80-yr intervals.

Between the Klondike Plateau and Yukon–Tanana highlands of Yukon and Alaska, respectively, current maps explain glaciated alpine locales and periglacial areas in terms of localized Pliocene–Pleistocene montane ice caps, alpine glaciers, and periglacial changes. However, this region’s plateau topography is populated with long undulating ridges having wide flattened tops; it contrasts with relief of other regions of northwestern North America also affected by ice caps, cryoplanation, and erosion over similar duration during the same epochs. This region has received minimal research and appears to present a new opportunity for resolving outstanding glaciological and stratigraphy issues. The glaciological history is reviewed, placing particular emphasis upon the low-elevation ridges within the “unglaciated” region, suggesting that those ridges are relict arête/cirque remnants. Sites of subalpine glacial grooving and mountaintop planing are also identified, and a conglomeratic red bed containing erratic clasts is described. All indications point to the “unglaciated” region having been glaciated before late Pliocene. Two working hypotheses are proposed: (1) The landscape once supported a range of young mountains that became glaciated then overridden and pared to a plateau by an ice sheet. (2) Following deglaciation, an extended period of paraglacial activity removed most of the former drift and excised new valleys to give the region an unglaciated appearance, which thereafter became modified into its present state by local montane/alpine glaciations, interglacial cryoplanation, periglacial gelifraction, and erosion. In addition to Pliocene–Pleistocene glaciations, a northeastward advancing Miocene ice sheet seems plausible and, on the basis of paleographic considerations and lithology, a Cretaceous glaciation evidently is also not out of the question.

X straight, four-mile tract of the Donjek River, Yukon, Canada is braided throughout, discharging about 50,000 cfs in flood.The active part of the tract shows upper regime flow in the main channels, and lacks vegetation. Higher, older levels are former river courses, partly or completely vegetated, with continuous flow (principally lower regime) only in the main channels. Comparing channel (width: depth) and topographic indices, the younger surfaces are more strongly dissected because of active channel cutting, whereas channels on older levels are subject to infilling.The sediments vary from clays to coarse gravels; most are poorly sorted. CM plots permit division into three main groups: silt and tuud of low energy environments such as abandoned channels, gravel of high energy channel-bar complexes, and a variable intermediate group which fills channels under medium-energy conditions. Seven facies are distinguished on textural, floral, and sedimentary structural characteristics. Facies relations are mostly gradational within channels, commonly fining upwards. They are more complex between channels, and invariably erosional.The origin and directional significance of hierarchical orders of sedimentary structures were studied. Six hundred and sixty measurements of small-scale structures (mostly ripples) show moderate within-bar and hetwren-har variation, and give a rand vector mean 22 degrees from the river trend. Bisectors of channel directional arcs (maximumand average ranges) approximate the river trend within 5 degrees.
