PLATT: A flexible platform for experimental research on team performance in complex environments

Abstract: Teams are everywhere. They can accomplish tasks that exceed the capabilities of single individuals. In our age of information, teams have to be able to cope with an increasingly complex world. Large amounts of information, with an often ambiguous and contradictory nature, tax the abilities of teams. They have to be effective in dynamic and unpredictable environments. To complicate matters even more, team members may be geographically dispersed, necessitating the use of technology to communicate with each other… Show more

“…In a broad range of contexts, shared situation awareness (SSA) is critical for teams to adapt to dynamic challenges (Burke, Stagl, Salas, Pierce, & Kendall, ), such as railway operations (Roth, Multer, & Raslear, ), managing nuclear power plants (Waller, Gupta, & Giambatista, ), military teamwork, and crisis management (Kamphuis, Essens, Houttuin, & Gaillard, ). SSA reflect the degree to which all the team members accurately know the information required to reach the goals and subgoals associated with their joint task (based on: Burke et al., ; Endsley, Bolte, & Jones, ; Uitdewilligen, Waller, & Ziljstra, ).…”

“…According to Brown and Miller (2000), the following attributes determine the complexity of a task: information load, number of subtasks, unfamiliarity with the task (referring to the absence of well-learned procedures or repetitive actions for performing the task), task uncertainty (pertaining to the ambiguity of information in the task and the lack of knowledge concerning the outcome of potential solution alternatives), and the number of goals or pathways to goals. The scenario used in this study scored high on each of these characteristics and was highly dynamic as well (see Kamphuis et al, 2010). Below, we describe the scenario in more detail.…”

“…Recent developments in team research have led to advancements in new theories, measures, and methods that view teams as being dynamic, multilevel, and complex dynamic systems [5,7,8]. While research within the field of team science has been growing, researchers are calling for further advancements within the team effectiveness field of study [7].…”

While research within the field of team science has been growing, researchers are calling for further advancements within the team effectiveness field of study [7]. In terms of multilevel systems, team researchers are calling for advancements in multilevel team theories and the analysis techniques [8] that account for temporal factors [8].…”
