Platelets as an indicator of vascular repair in elderly Japanese men

Abstract: Platelets and circulating CD34-positive cells have been reported to contribute to vascular repair (endothelial repair and developing atherosclerosis). And because hypertension is known to be a strong vascular impairment factors, it should also influence the respective numbers of these factors. To clarify the clinical importance of platelets on vascular repair, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 567 Japanese men aged 60-69 who underwent an annual health check-up between 2013 and 2015. Multiple linear regre… Show more

“…without hypertension, whereas no significant association was observed for subjects with hypertension. In addition, this previous study revealed that platelet count was not significantly associated with CIMT among subjects without hypertension but that it significantly positively associated with CIMT among those with hypertension 34 . These findings support the above-mentioned mechanism, showing that the status of hypertension could be associated with wasting reduction of circulating CD34-positive cells.…”

“…Hypertension masks the beneficial effect of CD34+ cells 5,34 and low levels of CD34+ cells acts as an indicator of the activity of the vicious cycle that exists between hypertension and endothelial dysfunction as evaluated using CIMT 6 . Since the present study aimed to clarify the influence of CD34+ cells on active arterial wall thickening, hypertension status-specific analyses were performed.…”
