Platelets and Their Interactions with Other Immune Cells

Abstract: Platelets are anucleate blood cells, long known to be critically involved in hemostasis and thrombosis. In addition to their role in blood clots, increasing evidence reveals significant roles for platelets in inflammation and immunity. However, the notion that platelets represent immune cells is not broadly recognized in the field of Physiology. This manuscript reviews the role of platelets in inflammation and immune responses, and highlights their interactions with other immune cells, including examples of ma… Show more

“…β-lysin, which is one of the most abundant compound found in PL after activation 46 has been described to act against bacteria cell-wall, rapidly killing and stopping bacteria reproduction [44][45] , which could explain the results from this study. In addition, other PL-derived molecules with antibacterial properties against Gram+ bacteria could be involved in this response, such as neutrophil activating protein-2 demonstrated capacity to kill Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria [47][48] . Although no effect was observed against Gram-bacteria and fungus, other factors can be found in PL with bactericidal and fungicidal activity.…”

“…Increasing evidence supports the notion that platelets represent immune cells, mediating a variety of inflammatory and immune responses. 9 One possible mechanism by which platelets may contribute to APAP-induced liver injury is via their interactions with leukocytes in promoting inflammation, as occurs in various other models of sterile inflammation. 9 Alternatively, platelets contain a host of proinflammatory mediators, which conceivably may mediate their role in APAP-induced liver injury.…”
