Platelet rich fibrin: New treatment modality in Grade II furcation defects

Abstract: Plateletrich rich fibrin (PRF) is an autologous healing biomaterial, which incorporates a matrix of autologous fibrin, leukocytes, platelets and growth factors, harvested from a simple blood sample. Various growth factors present in PRF are well-known source of cytokines, usable for clinical applications. Grade II furcation lesion is essentially a culde-sac with a definite horizontal component and involvement of the interradicular bone without a through-and-through ability to probe. Furcation defects represent… Show more

“…Amoxicillin (500 mg) and ibuprofen (800 mg) were prescribed thrice daily for 7 days along with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate mouth rinses twice daily for 2 weeks. 19 Postoperative follow-up care Periodontal dressing and sutures were removed 2 weeks postoperatively. Surgical wounds were gently cleansed with 0.12% of chlorhexidine (chlorhexidine digluconate) (PerioGard r ), and patients were instructed for gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, there were no studies comparing the use of PRF as membrane and that of collagen membrane in the treatment of furcation defects. When comparing change in clinical and radiologic parameters with other regenerative materials, PRF shows a greater effect in soft- and hard-tissue regeneration,[ 5 ] especially considering first-generation platelet concentrate (PRP). All the clinical and radiographic parameters showed better results for the PRF group in this study.…”

“…Two generations of platelet concentrates were used to enhance periodontal regeneration. The first generation includes platelet rich plasma (PRP) production protocols, while the second generation is the platelet rich fibrin (PRF) (5).…”
