BackgroundCosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly popular in China. However, reports on the predictive factors for cosmetic surgery in Chinese individuals are scarce in the literature.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 4550 cosmetic surgeries performed from January 2010 to December 2014 at a single center in China. Data collection included patient demographics and type of cosmetic surgery. Predictive factors were age, sex, marital status, occupational status, educational degree, and having had children. Predictive factors for the three major cosmetic surgeries were determined using a logistic regression analysis.ResultsPatients aged 19–34 years accounted for the most popular surgical procedures (76.9 %). The most commonly requested procedures were eye surgery, Botox injection, and nevus removal. Logistic regression analysis showed that higher education level (college, P = 0.01, OR 1.21) was predictive for eye surgery. Age (19–34 years, P = 0.00, OR 33.39; 35–50, P = 0.00, OR 31.34; ≥51, P = 0.00, OR 16.42), female sex (P = 0.00, OR 9.19), employment (service occupations, P = 0.00, OR 2.31; non-service occupations, P = 0.00, OR 1.76), and higher education level (college, P = 0.00, OR 1.39) were independent predictive factors for Botox injection. Married status (P = 0.00, OR 1.57), employment (non-service occupations, P = 0.00, OR 1.50), higher education level (masters, P = 0.00, OR 6.61), and having children (P = 0.00, OR 1.45) were independent predictive factors for nevus removal.ConclusionsThe principal three cosmetic surgeries (eye surgery, Botox injection, and nevus removal) were associated with multiple variables. Patients employed in non-service occupations were more inclined to undergo Botox injection and nevus removal.Level of evidenceCohort study, Level III.

Objective: As the population ages, facial plastic providers must remain aware of the treatments to prevent and reverse the external signs of aging. In the mandibular region, skin laxity and soft tissue sagging in the jawline may lead to jowling and chin ptosis along with reduced chin projection. While surgical procedures, including chin implantation, may be performed, nonsurgical procedures are becoming increasingly popular due to their temporary, noninvasive, yet effective methods. This review covers the use of hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polymethyl methacrylate in the jawline.Methods: PubMed was searched for data on the mechanism of action, pertinent anatomy, indications, contraindications, technique, and evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of the fillers.Results: There are a wide variety of fillers available for use in the lower face with unique characteristics and application methods. While the advantages of injectable fillers include relatively affordable cost, minimal patient discomfort, and limited recovery times, taking measures to prevent short-and long-term complications is necessary for optimal results. Conclusions: Understanding the benefits and limitations of injectable fillers in the jawline can help providers appropriately counsel and treat patients.

Background: Upper and lower blepharoplasty are among the most common procedures in aesthetic surgery and are often emotionally laden due to the subjective nature of outcomes and implications with beauty and self-identity. This article capitalizes on the increasing wealth of patient-provided health information online and is the first to analyze the emotions surrounding blepharoplasty discussions in an open internet health forum, MedHelp. Methods: We used Python to scrape MedHelp for threads that contained “blepharoplasty” and then used IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding to perform sentiment analyses, calculating a general sentiment score (−1 to +1) as well as emotion scores for anger, sadness, joy, fear, and disgust (0 to 1) for posts and keywords contained within the posts. Keywords were then manually grouped into five distinct clinical categories: symptoms, doctor, treatment, medication, and body. Results: We collected 52 threads containing “blepharoplasty,” yielding 154 posts and 1365 keywords. The average sentiment score was negative among all posts (−0.15) and keywords (−0.30). Among all posts and keywords, sadness had the highest score and disgust had the lowest score. Conclusions: Fear and sadness are the predominant emotions for blepharoplasty patients online, and the most negative symptoms cited are not ones that surgeons typically expect.
