Plasmon-assisted radiolytic energy conversion in aqueous solutions

Abstract: The field of conventional energy conversion using radioisotopes has almost exclusively focused on solid-state materials. Herein, we demonstrate that liquids can be an excellent media for effective energy conversion from radioisotopes. We also show that free radicals in liquid, which are continuously generated by beta radiation, can be utilized for electrical energy generation. Under beta radiation, surface plasmon obtained by the metallic nanoporous structures on TiO2 enhanced the radiolytic conversion via the… Show more

“…Wen et al 27 demonstrated the formation of 3D self-assembled structure of ZnO in the presence of In and Sn metal ions. In recent times, Kim and Kwon 28 used Ag seeded substrate to control the morphology of ZnO. In the present investigation, the morphological changes of ZnO were observed due to the presence of Eu and Sm ions used as dopants.…”

“…8 shows the exemplary results of conformal ZNW growths on glass, PI, and PC substrates. The underlying mechanism on the Ag-mediated hydrothermal ZNW growth is attributed to the interactions between oxidized Ag surface and ZnO complexes in the solution [42,43]. Briefly, the ionized Ag surface generating on the native oxide (i.e.…”

“…In 2011, City Labs, Inc. was given the first general license to manufacture and distribute tritium betavoltaics operating in the nanowatt range for low power applications8. Currently, all commercial and laboratorial betavoltaics operate at efficiencies less than 3%29. Herein, we revisit the mechanisms involved in betavoltaic power generation and consider ways to improve the efficiency to levels exceeding 10%.…”
