Plasma triglyceride metabolism in thyroid disease

Abstract: A B S T R A C T Plasma endogenous triglyceride transport kinetics were determined in 16 hyperthyroid and in 12 hypothyroid patients and the results compared with those of euthyroid control subjects. In addition, the removal of exogenous particulate fat (Intralipid; Vitrum, Sweden) from the circulation and the postheparin plasma lipolytic activity (PHLA) were studied in these patients for further characterization of the alterations of plasma triglyceride metabolism in thyroid disease. In thyrotoxicosis the avera… Show more

“…In overt hypothyroidism, due to the reduced activity of LDL-C receptors, the catabolism of LDL-C, and intermediate density lipoprotein-cholesterol are affected, consequently increasing serum TC and LDL-C. 20,21 Moreover, in overt hypothyroidism, the activity of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase is lowered, thereby inhibiting the removal of TG-rich lipoproteins leading to a high serum TG level. 22 In our study, the mean HDL-C was lower in SCH than in European Union, but the difference was not statistically significant. This result is in contrast to the study done in Tamil Nadu where the HDL-C was significantly lower in SCH compared to European Union.…”

“…It is claimed that thyroid hormones facilitate the LPL activity 11 , but deficiency of thyroid hormones to inhibit LPL probably follows a ceiling point beyond which further reduction of thyroid hormones does not cause further inhibition of LPL.…”

“…Nikkilia & Kekki 11 have stated that hypertriglyceridemia in hypothyroidism is due to decreased activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which results in decreased clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins.…”

“…They assumed that for the remaining patients single-exponential analysis should provide a reasonable approximation. It should be emphasized that in most of these previous studies, decay curves were followed for only [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] h, whereas the departure from log-linear decay is often not readily apparent until later times.…”
