Plasma‐transaminase and transferase activities in pigs affected with muscular and liver dystrophy

Abstract: Summary The plasma levels of glutamic‐oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic‐pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and ornithine‐carbamyl transferase (OCT) were studied in 11 pigs with spontaneous liver dystrophy (LD) and 14 pigs with spontaneous muscular dystrophy (MD). LD is associated with elevations of all three enzymes. In MD, GOT and GPT are elevated but OCT is normal. This is in accordance with the observation that the content of OCT is very low in swine muscles. GOT and OCT are more specific than GPT, which may… Show more

“…Bie most common post mortem findings (Hartley and Grant, 1961;Lannek, 1967;Oksanen, 1967) and liver dystrophy (LD) (Orstadius et al, 1959;Lannek et al, 1960;TanhuanpSË, 1965;Lannek, 1967;Oksanen, 1967). The increase in serum enzymes has been interpreted to indicate a release of the enzymes from damaged tissue into the blood stream.…”

“…re ported that clinical signs of NMD in pigs are seldom seen since affected animals are usually found dead. Estimations of SGOT and LDH in serum have become important aids for the diagnosis of NMD(Orstadius et al, 1959;Oksanen, 1967;Ewan and Wastell, 1970). The activities of SGOT and LDH increase when pigs are fed low vitamin E and selenium diets.…”
