Plasma TGF-β1, TIMP-1, MMP-1 and IL-18 as a combined biomarker of psoriasis activity

Abstract: Plasma levels of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1, tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and interleukin (IL)-18 when analyzed separately demonstrate an association with psoriasis severity and treatment efficacy. To determine the highest correlation with the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score we carried out an analysis of these four proteins combined as the TTMI score. Concentrations of proteins were measured using an enzyme immunoassay in the plas… Show more

“…Increased plasma and serum levels of IL-18 were revealed in patients with psoriasis compared to a control group [170][171][172]. An association between concentration of IL-18 and PASI index has also been reported [171,173].…”

“…Interleukin-2, Interleukin-6, Interleukin-8 and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) are the hallmark cytokines in the psoriatic cytokine network [7]. IL-1b, IL-4, IL-10, IL-17 and IL-18 too have been found to play a key role in the pathogenesis of the disease [8,9].…”

“…In contrast to the inhibitory effect of IL-6 on regulatory T-cell function [28], Th17 cell development requires IL-6 in addition to TGF-β [25]. Interestingly, increased levels of TGF-β1 and IL-6 have been found in the epidermis and the serum of psoriasis patients [28,29] and the TGF-β1 serum level correlated with disease severity [30,31], elucidating the increased level of Th17 effector cells in patients with psoriasis.…”
