Plasma levels of microRNA-24, microRNA-320a, and microRNA-423-5p are potential biomarkers for colorectal carcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundMicroRNAs are stable and easy to detect in plasma. The plasma levels of microRNAs are often changed in disease conditions, including cancer. This makes circulating microRNAs a novel class of biomarkers for cancer diagnosis. Analyses of online microRNA data base revealed that expression level of three microRNAs, microRNA-24 (miR-24), microRNA-320a (miR-320a), and microRNA-423-5p (miR-423-5p) were down-regulated in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, whether the plasma level of these three microRNAs can … Show more

“…Fang et al 24 found that miR-423-5p is downregulated in the plasma of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells and that it could serve as a potential biomarker for colorectal carcinoma. Stiuso et al 25 showed that miR-423-5p promotes autophagy in hepatocarcinoma cells, and miR-423-5p was also found to regulate cell proliferation and invasion in gastric cancer cells.…”

“…22,23 Several studies have reported that miR-423-5p functions as a biomarker and has important roles in many types of cancers. [24][25][26] However, there is no research to date that refers to the role of miR-423-5p in glioma tissues. In this study, we report that miR-423-5p is overexpressed in GBMs and is a novel tumor promoter in GBM.…”

“…As a result, circulating miRNAs aim to screen for the detection of CRC should have an efficiency at delineating the earlier lesions. Combined the above miRNAs, a unique serum or plasma expression profile of miR-15b, miR-17, miR-18a, miR-21, miR-23a-3p, miR-24, miR-142-3p, miR-142-5p, miR-195, miR-320a, miR-331, miR376c-3p, miR-423-5p, miR-532, miR-532-3p, miR-652 and miR-1290 could distinguish benign colorectal polyp or adenoma lesions from healthy controls with good accuracy or high AUC values [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. High levels of circulating miR-34a, miR-152 and low miR-150 levels were associated with the distinguish of patients with polyps or adenomas from those with CRC (AUC from 0.537 to 0.904) [34].…”
