“…Lipoxygenase inhibitors were found to be anticlastogenic in our previous study with samples from children with FMF (Emerit et al 1993), and increases in metabolites derived from the lipoxygenase pathway of AA metabolism were described in patients with FMF (Panosian et al 1986;Grigorian 1993, Mejlumian et al 1992. The levels of leukotrienes B 4 and C 4 (LTB 4 and LTC 4 ), derived from the action of 5-lipoxygenase, were 2-3 times higher in plasma from FMF patients than from healthy controls (Gabrielian et al 1990). LTB 4 is a potent chemotactic agent and a complete secretagogue in human neutrophils (Borgeat and Samuelsson 1979).…”

“…LTB 4 is a potent chemotactic agent and a complete secretagogue in human neutrophils (Borgeat and Samuelsson 1979). It is known that the massive influx of neutrophils into the serosal membranes in FMF is connected with degranulation of neutrophils and with secretion of lysosomal enzymes and pyrogenic substances (Gabrielian et al 1990). The increase in the chemotactic agent, LTB 4 , combined with the diminished activity of the inhibitor of chemotaxis, C5a, in serosal fluid (Matzner and Brzezinki 1984) may represent an explanation for the migration of neutrophils during the paroxysmal attacks of pain and fever.…”
