Plasma leptin levels in pigs with different leptin and leptin receptor genotypes

Abstract: A C3469T mutation at exon 3 of the pig leptin (Lep) gene has been genotyped in diverse pig breeds yielding controversial results with regard to its association with growth, fatness and carcass traits. A similar situation has been reported for a HpaII restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in the pig leptin receptor (Lepr) gene, where associations were found depending on the statistical model employed. The main objective of our work was to investigate if leptin plasma concentrations differ in pigs with… Show more

“…The leptin concentrations were also higher in the current experiment compared to McCauley et al [4] and Batorek et al [10]. This can be attributed to differences in the assay type (multi-species radioimmunoassay method versus a pig specific competitive ELISA method) and leptin specificity of the respective methods [23]. …”

“…Several SNPs have been previously reported in introns and exons of the leptin gene among different breeds of cattle (Schenkel et al 2005). Associations of polymorphisms in leptin with carcass and meat quality traits were also reported in Iranian sheep (Barzehkar et al 2009) and exon 3 of pigs (Amills et al 2007). Our results prove the presence of single polymorphic site in exon 2 and intron 2 each, different from the SNP reported by Singh et al (2009).…”

“…(2009) investigated the relationships between the genotypes of the LEP and LEPR genes and serum leptin concentrations in two lines by crossing maternal White cross (Yorkshire × Maternal Landrace) gilts to Duroc or Landrace boars, and in one line by crossing progeny of the Duroc‐ and Landrace‐sired lines, and evidenced an association between the genotype of the LEPR gene and serum leptin concentration and no effect of the LEP gene. Amills et al . (2008) did not determine any association between the genotypes of two genes and serum leptin concentrations in a Landrace population.…”
