Plasma Endothelin-1 Concentrations in Patients with Behçet' Disease

Abstract: Plasma Endothelin-1 (ET-1) concentrations were determined by radio immunoassay in 30 patients with Behçet's disease at various stages and 20 healthy subjects. Mean ET-1 plasma concentrations were significantly (p < 0.001) increased in patients with active Behçet's disease (35.99 +/- 5.06 fmol/ml, mean +/- standard error) compared to concentrations found in healthy volunteers (10.98 +/- 0.84 fmol/ml). No difference in plasma ET-1 level was observed between patients with inactive Behçet's disease (12.98 +/- 1.14… Show more

“…These observations are supported by other studies as well. [2322149] It is not known whether elevated ET-1 levels are a direct result of its increased synthesis from injured vascular endothelial cells or whether its high concentrations may be responsible, along with other factors, for both vascular and articular complications in patients with BD. [22] One study attributed the increase of serum ET-1 levels in BD to increased secretion or leakage of this mitogen from injured vascular endothelial cells.…”

“…The sample size was calculated by using the results of previous studies that investigated the levels of ADMA (10)(11)(12), and ET-1 (13)(14)(15) Results were presented as mean±SD, and † median±IQR. p values <0.05 accepted as statistically significant.…”

“…Increasing evidence suggests that reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by sites of endothelial inflammation and activated lymphocytes overwhelm the antioxidant defense systems, reacting with NO, decreasing the ability of vasodilatation and inhibiting thrombosis [67]. Moreover, the level of endothelin 1, another product of endothelial cells which antagonizes the effects of NO and might lead to thrombosis, was significantly higher in patients with BD [68].…”
