Plasma Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Concentration and BDNF/TrkB Gene Polymorphisms in Croatian Adults with Asthma

Abstract: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) receptor might contribute to normal lung functioning and immune responses; however, their role in asthma remains unclear. Plasma BDNF concentration, as well as BDNF and NTRK2 (TrkB gene) polymorphisms, were investigated in 120 asthma patients and 120 healthy individuals using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and polymerase chain reaction, respectively. The genotype and allele frequencies of BDNF Val66Met (rs6265) and NTRK2 rs… Show more

“…Studies showed that IL4 , a key effector Th2 cytokine in allergic asthma, was essential for B cells autophagy induction in vivo and in vitro , thereby further sustaining B cell survival and enhanced B cell antigen presentation ( 73 ). BDNF may contribute to normal lung function and immune response and may serve as a potential peripheral biomarker for asthma, especially that is aspirin-sensitive ( 74 ). Studies have shown that SPINK5 has biological actions other than protease inhibition, which may be related to the pathogenesis of asthma ( 75 ).…”

“…The control group consisted of volunteer blood donors recruited at the Croatian Institute for Transfusion Medicine, Zagreb, Croatia. The inclusion and exclusion criteria for enrolment of the subjects in the study have previously been outlined in detail [53]. Data regarding age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and smoking were collected for all subjects.…”

“…Skin prick testing (SPT), spirometry with bronchodilation, single-breath diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) test and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurement were performed. The forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1 ), forced vital capacity (FVC), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were calculated as stated previously [53]. The eosinophil and neutrophil counts were obtained from automated complete blood counts.…”
