Plasma Adiponectin Levels and Risk of Myocardial Infarction in Men

Abstract: Context Adiponectin, a recently discovered adipocyte-derived peptide, is involved in the regulation of insulin sensitivity and lipid oxidation and, purportedly, in the development of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease in humans. Objective To assess prospectively whether plasma adiponectin concentrations are associated with risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Design, Setting, and Participants Nested case-control study among 18225 male participants of the Health Professionals Follow-up Study aged 40 to 7… Show more

“…In humans, plasma adiponectin levels appear to be inversely related to insulin resistance and the severity of coronary artery disease (Cesari et al 2006). Interestingly, increased plasma adiponectin correlates with a reduced risk of MI in men (Pischon et al 2004) and a lower risk of coronary heart disease in diabetics (Schulze et al 2005). Oddly, adiponectin levels appear to decrease post-MI (Kojima et al 2003).…”

“…The beneficial effects of the MedDiet on health have basically been attributed to its high content of antioxidants, dietary fiber [45], MUFA and PUFA [46] and low glycemic load and glycemic index [47]. In particular, antioxidants and polyphenols have been shown to exert a protective role against ischemic CVD mainly due to their antiinflammatory properties [48].…”

“…Adiponectin, the most abundant protein secreted by the adipose tissue (Arita et al 1999) and circulating in human plasma as multimeric forms (Liu & Liu 2012), has been associated with endothelial improvement and vascular protection (Beltowski et al 2008, Zhu et al 2008 through the activation of an endothelial isoform of nitric oxide (eNOS)-related signaling, with antiinflammatory (Ouchi & Walsh 2007) and antiatherogenic properties (Barseghian et al 2011). It is also of interest that numerous epidemiological studies have correlated decreased adiponectin levels with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in obesity and diabetes (Kumada et al 2003, Pischon et al 2004, Frystyk et al 2007) and with coronary artery disease (Hara et al 2007). As such, adiponectin deficiency has been reported to be predictive of future adverse cardiac events (Kojima et al 2006) and has been associated with increased oxidative stress and inferior recovery in cardiac function (Shibata et al 2008).…”
