Plaque‐type blue nevus combined with lentigo (nevus spilus)

Abstract: Three cases of plaque-type blue nevus accompanied with lentigo-like changes were reported. The combination of blue nevus and lentigo (nevus spilus) is a new type of "combined nevus", but it belongs to the second type of Kawamura's atypical blue nevus. This combination is unlikely to be rare, not only in plaque-type, but also in common type blue nevus, and to be comparable with the findings of such dermal melanocytosis as nevus of Ota. Histologically, cellular blue nevus was also observed in areas of Case 1.

“…There is currently no clear consensus on prognostic factors in relation to the size of such lesions - in this case, 7.5 cm. Numerous cases have been described in the literature, with sizes ranging from 6 to 17 cm [4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11], as mentioned in the introduction. There are no clear follow-up guidelines in sizes below 20 cm.…”

“…It can be present at birth or arise in childhood, as in our case. It is usually rare, but can present a diagnostic problem when associated with a lentigo or a nevus spilus, for instance [9]. Histologically, PTBN shows features of both CBN and ordinary blue nevus.…”

“…Blue nevi are usually solitary, but sometimes they may be multiple and grouped in an area, a pattern of arrange ment that is more properly designed in the dermatologic lit erature under the term 'agminated' [ 11. Only a few cases of agminated blue nevi have been reported [2][3][4][5][6][7][8], some of them under the names of plaque-type blue nevus [4,8] and eruptive blue nevi [6], We prefer the first designation because we think that it is more descriptive. In this paper we report an additional patient with agminated blue nevi.…”

“…Hofmann-Wellenhof et al [12]could demonstrate a patient with Spitz nevus arising on a nevus spilus. Other authors report the combination of plaque-type blue nevus with nevus spilus [13]. The development of malignant melanoma in nevus spilus is a rare but well-documented phenomenon [14, 15].…”
