Plants and Natural Products for the Treatment of Skin Hyperpigmentation – A Review

Abstract: Skin hyperpigmentation is caused by several factors that upregulate melanogenesis. Plants and natural products with skin-whitening effects are gaining interest among consumers and researchers because they are perceived to be milder, safer, and healthier than synthetic alternatives. This review extensively summarizes the status of plants and natural products currently used in skin-whitening cosmetics as well as potential candidates for future use, because the scope of natural choices for efficient treatment of … Show more

“…Accordingly, improvement of skin hydration following makeup removed using the pumpkin seed oil remover was obviously noted by the volunteers. In addition, a consecutive application of this developed natural makeup remover for everyday usage would enhance skin benefits of pumpkin seed oil's phytochemicals for instance skin hydration and delaying of skin aging (Alvarex and Rodríguez, ; Kanlayavattanakul and Lourith, , ), respectively.…”

“…Active compounds isolated from different plants inhibit melanogenesis with no cytotoxicity by different mechanisms including inhibition of tyrosinase and other related protein expressions, inhibition of tyrosinase activity, inhibition of melanin dispersion and translocation, etc. [8][9][10].…”

“…Melanocytes play an essential role in defending the skin against UV light and free radicals [4,5]. In addition, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is a main factor controlling the transcription of enzymes such as tyrosinase [6]. Tyrosinase is transcriptionally regulated by MITF, which plays an essential role in melanin synthesis signaling [7,8].…”
