Show more

“…Because dry bolls are fruiting bodies that have not developed properly and because the number of cotton fruiting bodies is influenced by plant genotype (Fowler and Ray 1977;Bednarz et al 2005Bednarz et al , 2006Khan et al 2009), formation of dry bolls appears to be associated with cultivar effects. Environmental and crop management conditions can also influence the number of reproductive structures produced by cotton plants (Fowler and Ray 1977;Jost and Cothren 2000;Bednarz et al 2005Bednarz et al , 2006Siebert et al 2006;Khan et al 2020); therefore, crop management factors, such as appropriate nitrogen fertilisation, can reduce the formation of dry bolls (Ferrari et al 2012). Other factors that hinder cotton boll development, such as injuries caused by phytophagous arthropods and microorganisms, may cause the formation of dry bolls (Mailhot et al 2007;Praça 2007;Osekre et al 2009;Srivastava et al 2010).…”

“…In our study, the DP 555 BGRR and Delta Opal cultivars formed greater numbers of dry bolls and empty pupal cells, which might enhance boll weevil populations. Dry bolls are related to loss of quality and reduced commercial value of the cotton fibre produced (Praça 2007;Ferrari et al 2012;Azambuja and Degrande 2014;Bélot et al 2016); therefore, cultivars that form more dry bolls have disadvantages compared to cultivars that produce fewer dry bolls.…”
