Plant-Wide Economic Comparison of Lactic Acid Recovery Processes by Reactive Distillation with Different Alcohols

Abstract: Process designs for the continuous recovery of lactic acid from fermentation broth by reactive distillation (esterification and hydrolysis with C1 to C4 alcohols) are developed and optimized to minimize cost. The best designs are qualitatively different for different alcohols because of the differing volatility ranking of reactants and products and the formation of a two-liquid phase zone in some cases. The results suggest that the methanol and butanol processes are the most attractive. The costs of these two … Show more

“…The Mg(OH) 2 crystals were filtered and recycled back to fermentation; the R 3 N-lactate complex was thermally decomposed to release lactic acid and the R 3 N was recycled back to the exchange reactor [ 68 , 69 ]. Purification of crude lactic acid product from fermentation broth [ 70 ], in a two-step reaction process, involved the esterification of lactic acid and hydrolysis of the ester, giving the highest purity levels (99.5% wt) [ 71 , 72 ].…”

“…The flash separators are known to operate at low temperature, opposite to some other unit operations used in similar cases, such as reactive distillation in lactic acid production 21, electrodialysis 44, and high‐performance liquid chromatography for synthesis of lactobionic acid 45. This can be translated into a decrease in the separation costs, which is essential since the separation and purification steps can contribute up to 50 % of the production costs 21, 46, 47.…”

“…Para as simulações da hidrogenação de LA foi considerada uma alimentação de 2 % em mol de LA em águatípica para processos fermentativosa 423,15 K, enquanto para ET-LA a composição molar considerada foi 48,2% etanol, 36,3% água, 15,3% lactato de etila e 0,2% ácido láctico (Su et al, 2013), típica da esterificação de ácido láctico com etanol.…”
