Plant profile, phytochemistry and pharmacology of Cordia dichotoma (Indian cherry): A review

Abstract: More than half of the world's population relies on the traditional medicine and major role of the traditional medicine including the use of plant extract and their active constituents. Among them, Cordia dichotoma Forst., a small to moderate size plant of family Boragenaceae, commonly called bhokar, lasura, gonda, Indian cherry and shlesmataka. Plant parts such as leaves, fruit, bark and seed have been reported for possessing antidiabetic, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, immune-modulator and analgesic activity. … Show more

“…Screening of literature revealed that, R. caffra, has been previously investigated for its chemical constituents. However, among the various phytochemicals identified to occur in this plant and other species of Rauvolfia genus, mainly alkaloids especially indole alkaloids along with phenols, flavonoids and tannins were detected in large amounts (Amer and Court 1981;O'Connor and Maresh 2006;Deshmukh et al 2012;Jamkhande et al 2013). R. caffra has not been investigated for antitubercular activity.…”

“…Several bioactive compounds were identified in the seeds of C. dichotoma [ figure 2]. The seed contains α-amyrins 3,4 , betulin 6 , octacosanol, lupeol-3-rhamnoside, β-sitosterol 4 , β-sitosterol-3-glucoside, hentricontanol, hentriacontane, taxifolin-3-5-dirhamnoside 6 , hesperitin-7-rhamnoside and fatty acids such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, arachidic acid, behenic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. Flavonoid glycosides (rutoside, robinin, rutin, datiscoside and hesperidin), flavonoid aglycone (dihydrorobinetin) and phenolic derivatives (chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid) were also isolated from seeds 4 .…”

The significant anti-inflammatory activity of seeds may be attributed because of α-amyrins and taxifolin-3-5-dirhamnoside 3,6 .…”

“…The whole plant of Cordia dichotoma is edible and is used as food. Immature fruits are pickled and are also used as vegetable (Jamkhande et al, 2013). Also, it was found that the using of Cordia myxa fruit extract or its powder as stabilizer for ice cream production produced a better quality with low cost product (Al-Hamdani, 2017).…”
