Potato is a plant that has high nutrient demand during its cycle. Given the concern with the environment, due to the large amount of synthetic mineral fertilizer used in the crops, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of organomineral fertilizers in the cultivation of potato, cultivar Ágata, under cerrado conditions. The experimental design was in subdivided plots, consisted of four doses of organomineral fertilizer, corresponding to 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120% of the mineral fertilizer dose in the organomineral source (2800 kg ha-1 of formulated 3-32-6) and the subplots consisted of four collection seasons (61, 74, 89 and 110 days after planting) and four repetitions. Organomineral fertilizer with 40% of the recommended dose for potato cultivation provides higher yield of tubers in the Especial potato class and higher accumulation of total dry mass, in addition to providing satisfactory productivity for the tubers of higher commercial value. The use of organomineral fertilizers promotes the same behavior as mineral fertilizers, not interfering with potato development.

Potato is a temperate crop greately adapted to tropical climate as evidenced by the greater share of production by the tropical countries in recent years. It is grown mainly during rainy seasons coupled with long summers in majority of potato growing countries. However, the sub-tropics country like India, kharif (or) rainy season potatoes is still an underexploited segment which is mainly restricted to hills and plateaus, but not plains. Unlike short day crops grown during winter, the yield of kharif potato is far lower. However, the simulation model estimated the attainable yield could be enhanced substantially by extending canopy cover (100%) duration from 10 to and 40 days over the existing window of favourable growing period at various kharif growing areas. Accordingly, the yield could be enhanced from 25.4 to 34.7 t.ha−1 in plateaus (Dharwad), and from 31.9 to 42.0 t.ha−1 in Northern HH (Shimla). The South and Northern HH locations (Ooty and Shimla respectively) registered a higher attainable yield (45.1 and 42.0 t.ha−1, respectively) which strongly indicates the necessity of trait specific improvement program for developing better phenotype combination having high water, radiation and light use efficiency for enhanced yield potential.

Impact of UV-C Irradiation of Potato Seed Tubers on the Defects in Potato Plant Crops

The purpose of the paper was to determine the impact of UV-C irradiation of seed potatoes on the formation of tuber defects in the progeny crop. The field experiment was carried out in 2016-2018, and the object of research was potato plants of the Vineta, Lord and Owacja varieties. Different heights of the UV-C radiator above the chamber bottom (40-100 cm) and exposure times (1-30 min.) were used. Data was analyzed with the STATISTICA 13.3 program, at the assumed significance level α = 0.05, using a non-parametric test χ2 for multidimensional contingency tables. In the scope of the parameters of the chamber for UV irradiation of plant material adopted in the experiment, no statistically significant UV-C effect on potato tuber defects was demonstrated. In the potato tuber crop of the examined varieties, shape deformations in the form of kidney and spindle disease were identified. The crop of potato obtained from seed potatoes irradiated with UV-C demonstrated a lower percentage of deformed tubers, as compared to the control combination.
