Plant metabolomics: a new strategy and tool for quality evaluation of Chinese medicinal materials

Abstract: The present quality control method of Chinese medicinal materials (CMM) has obvious deficiency, which cannot be compatible with the multi-target and multi-component characteristics and production process of CMM. Plant metabolomics with a huge impetus to comprehensively characterize the metabolites and clarify the complexity and integrity of CMM, has been widely used in the research of CMM. This article comprehensively reviewed the application of plant metabolomics in the quality control of CMM. It introduced t… Show more

“…Chromatography-based untargeted metabolomics analyses are rapid and reliable approaches which have been quickly developed and applied for the quality research of Chinese herbal medicines in recent years (Tao et al, 2018;Lu, et al, 2022;Xiao, et al, 2022). However, appropriate screening and Frontiers in Pharmacology frontiersin.org selection of the chemical markers with minimum combination for effective species discrimination is very important for such studies.…”

“…The HPLC and MS results of the isolated active ingredients were compared with those reported in the existing literature. The ten isolated compounds were identified as wogonin, ononin, isoquercitrin, calycosin‐7‐glucoside, 3‐hydroxy‐9,10‐dimethoxyptercarpan, hyperoside, 7,2′‐dihydroxy‐3′,4′‐dimethoxyisoflavan, baicalein, calycosin, and soyasaponin (corresponding to peaks 1–10 in the HPLC diagram, respectively) [24] (Figure 5). According to the area normalization method, their purities were 98.53%, 96.72%, 96.11%, 95.29%, 97.91%, 98.25%, 95.46%, 95.23%, 95.18%, and 95.57%, respectively.…”

“…The quality of herbal materials is well-known to be affected by factors such as origin, harvesting time, cultivation sites, post-harvesting processing, procedures in extraction and preparation, and others ( 61 ). Quality consistency evaluation becomes necessary for quality assurance of finished HCE products.…”
