Plant Macrofossils From Late‐devensian Deposits at Nant Ffrancon, Caernarvonshire

Abstract: SUMMARYThe occurrence of plant macrofossils in Late-Devensian sediments from the valley of Nant Ffrancon is described. The range of fossils present and their distribution relative to changes in the sedimentary sequence allow an interpretation to be made of the Late-Devensian environments of the area. A time of barren landscape, as ice retreated from the valley and adjacent areas, was followed by a brief period of vegetation development in which some woody plants were present, then a brief return to colder cond… Show more

“…At the majority of the sites the stratigraphy shows a progressive upward change from minerogenic to organic sediments with the renewed inwash of minerogenic material at the Late-glacial Interstadial/Loch Lomond Stadial boundary. Only at Nant Ffrancon (Burrows, 1974(Burrows, , 1975 and Cors Geuallt (Crabtree, 1969(Crabtree, , 1972) have more complicated sequences been found. In the former basin, an organic horizon believed to be of Interstadial age is underlain by grey, sometimes stony clays, which are separated from a basal, largely non-fossiliferous rhythmite sequence by a series of organic-rich silts containing macrofossil remains of thermophilous plants including Betula and F. ulmaria.…”

“…Birks, 1975) deposits. Seeds were found in Nant Ffrancon, Snowdonia, by Seddon (1962) and by Burrows (1974) and the plant still persists in that area as well as in other, mainly coastal, localities in Wales. Birks (1973) records pollen of this type from surface samples of a variety of sub-alpine grasslands, tall herb communities and willow scrub which also contain many of the other pollen components of this pollen zone.…”
