The Late‐glacial and Early Flandrian Deposits at Traeth Mawr, Brecon Beacons, South Wales

Abstract: SUMMARYPollen-stratigraphic investigations are described from a site on the northern slopes of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, in which over 50 m of Devensian Late-glacial and early Flandrian sediments have accumulated. Relative (percentage) pollen concentration, and deteriorated pollen diagrams were constructed and these data were augmented by radiocarbon dates from the major stratigraphic boundaries. The evidence shows that relatively mild conditions characterized the Late-glacial Interstadial, but these we… Show more

“…This takes the form of a double peak, with the earlier peak reaching the highest frequencies. A climatic oscillation within the Betula phase has also been recorded, along with an earlier smaller second oscillation, at other sites across the UK including Gransmoor in NE England (Mayle et al 1999;Walker et al 1993), Traeth Mawr (Walker 1982) and Borrobol (Mayle et al 1999), and is dated between 13 000 and 12 800 GRIP year BP at Hawes Water (Jones et al 2002).…”

“…1) indicate that this renewed glacier development occurred during the Loch Lomond Stadial ofthe Late-glacial period (Walker, 1980), approximately equivalent in time with the Younger Dryas of Scandinavia (Sissons, 1979;Lowe and Gray, 1980). The basin which is downvalley from the moraines contains a full sequence of Late-glacial sediments, the details of which have been considered elsewhere (Walker, 1982). This paper discusses the biostratigraphy at the two sites within the moraines of Craig-y-Fro and Craig Cerrig-gleisiad where only Flandrian sediments are found, and describes landscape changes in this part of the Brecon Beacons from the disappearance of the Loch Lomond Advance glaciers to the establishment of Quercus and Alnus woodland some 4000 to 5000 years later.…”
