Plant Growth Modulates Metabolites and Biological Activities in Retama raetam (Forssk.) Webb

Abstract: This work focuses on the variability of Retama raetam (Forssk.) Webb bioactive compounds as a function of the plant cycle. The main results showed that it exhibited the highest percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids, along with superior levels of vitamin C and total phenolic compounds (66.49%, 645.6 mg·100 g−1 FW and 23.9 mg GAE·g−1, respectively) at the vegetative stage. Instead, at the flowering and mature fruiting stages, R. raetam (Forssk.) Webb exhibited notable contents of proline (25.4 μmol·g−1 DW) a… Show more

“…Then, liquid/liquid partition of a part of the crude ethanol extract (20.00 g) was performed for three times using increasing polarity solvents ( n -hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n -butanol); thus, a separation of the compounds was obtained based on the affinity with the solvent used [ 30 , 31 ]. The extraction yield of dry n -hexane (ScH), chloroform (ScC), ethyl acetate (ScEA), n -butanol (ScB) and water (ScW) fractions is reported in Figure 1 .…”

“…The antioxidant activity of extracts was measured in terms of radical-scavenging ability of radical ABTS· + , as previously described [ 53 ]. Several concentrations of extracts/standard (50 μL) were added to 250 µL of diluted ABTS· + solution.…”

“…The ABTS scavenging activity was determined by the method of Saada et al [ 33 ]. Trolox (between 0 and 0.2 mM) was used as a positive control and in the calibration curve.…”
