Plant Extracts as Alternative Additives for Sperm Preservation

Abstract: Sperm preservation is a crucial factor for the success of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in humans, livestock, and wildlife. Irrespective of the extender and the storage conditions used, semen handling and preservation negatively affect sperm quality. Moreover, oxidative stress, which often arises during semen storage, significantly reduces sperm function and compromises the sperm fertilizing ability by inducing oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Plant extracts have recently emerg… Show more

“…Moreover, alkaloids and Vit E were found in WNAE. Alkaloids were beneficial for sperm preservation [ 34 ]. Therefore, WNAE has the potential to effectively scavenge free radicals and increase sperm quality in the vitro model more than Vit E, due to the three compounds of WNAE in the form of crude extract being more effective than isolated compounds [ 35 ].…”

“…In other studies, egg yolk significantly improved the parameters of red deer epididymal spermatozoa after dilution and during storage in a liquid state [ 45 , 47 ]. However, egg yolk can lead to microbiological contamination of preserved sperm [ 48 ], which is why plant-based substitutes are increasingly used to store human and animal semen [ 49 ]. In extenders, egg yolk can be replaced by soy lecithin (a component of BioXcell ® ), lipoproteins and plant proteins (components of BoviFree ® ).…”

“…Antioxidants evidently provide a cryoprotective effect to spermatozoa of different species, including humans (for a review, see Ros-Santaella & Pintus, 2021). In this study, we supplement a Tris-egg yolk extender with crocin, a known potent antioxidant, foreseeing an improvement of post-thaw semen parameters.…”

“…The structural and functional integrity of post‐thaw spermatozoa is a prerequisite for successful in vivo and in vitro fertilization (Gillan et al., 2005). Antioxidants evidently provide a cryoprotective effect to spermatozoa of different species, including humans (for a review, see Ros‐Santaella & Pintus, 2021). In this study, we supplement a Tris‐egg yolk extender with crocin, a known potent antioxidant, foreseeing an improvement of post‐thaw semen parameters.…”
