Weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motsch.) is a vital arthropod pest of maize (Zea mays L.) grains and flours in traditional storage systems. The pest bore holes into stored grains reducing their nutrient contents germination potentials and contaminating produce with frass. Its control using synthetic insecticides such as permethrin is being downplayed due to eco-mammalian toxicity from pesticide residues. Therefore, this study evaluates the toxicities of some indigenous plants Ageratum conyzoides L., Cymbopogon nardus L., clay and permethrin, under laboratory conditions to the insect pest. Maize grains weighing 50 g were treated with the plant powders and the synthetic insecticide at five different levels 0.00; 1.25; 2.50; 3.75 and 5.00 g. Subsequently, 10 adult weevils in each vial were used to infest the 50 g maize grains. Each plant powder and permethrin's effectiveness was assessed by recording weevil mortality at 5, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days post-treatment. The damage indices recorded by the weevil perforation index (WPI), percentage of perforated and unperforated grains, and weight loss percentage were also considered. Permethrin proved most toxic, followed by clay at 5.00 g among all the treatments. A. conyzoides and C. nardus were less effective in controlling S. zeamais. In conclusion, clay can be used in the integrated management of S. zeamais to minimize synthetic insecticides.

The obstacles faced in increasing and stabilizing the production of pakcoy Brassica rapa L. one of them is due to pest attacks. The main pests that attack pakcoy plants are Plutella xylostella L., C. pavonana, earthworms (Agrotis ipsilon), and grayworm (Spodoptera litura). The use of pesticides can provide the only form of crop protection available Developing countries from some pesticides that have been banned from use in the European Union (EU), as they have recognized the harmful properties of such pesticides. Vegetable pesticides are effective against various destructive pests and diseases. Broadly speaking, vegetable pesticide raw materials are easy to obtain, cheap, easily accessible, quickly decompose, and have little toxicity to receiving agents. Simplisia vegetable pesticide product is a pesticide product based on soursop leaves, lemongrass, and papaya leaves. All three ingredients contain chemical compounds or extractive substances. This study used vegetable pesticide simplicia products with several concentrations to suppress the attack of pakcoy leaf-destroying pests. The research took place in the experimental garden was carried out for 4 weeks from the seeding period to harvest. Research is carried out by experimental methods. The results of this study show that vegetable pesticide simplicia is able to suppress the attack of pakcoy leaf pests with a very significant concentration found in the P2 treatment, which is 40grams per liter of water

Field parameter measurement is usually constrained by time management, causing measurement delays and, therefore, different results between field parameters and the actual environmental conditions. Tofu liquid waste contains a low pH (3–5) and suspended, colloidal, and dissolved organics matter at high concentrations; the latter might change rapidly and also cause changes to other parameters. Tofu liquid waste from a tofu factory outlet was used in this study. The field parameters in this study included pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and electrical conductivity (EC) by storage time variation of 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes. The total nitrogen was analyzed by the Kjeldahl method with a storage time variation of 2, 4, 6, and 8 days. The measurement of pH found no significant difference (sig > 0.05) up to 30 minutes of storage time, while EC and TDS significantly differed within 20 minutes. The total nitrogen was stable up to the second day of storage time at a storage temperature of 4–8 °C without preservatives. In water quality monitoring, the results of water samples analysis should be as close as possible to their values in the environment. This research shows that field parameters’ results can change quickly if the sample handling and analysis time are not by procedures, especially for EC and TDS. In addition, this study also shows that without giving H2SO4, the value of total nitrogen in tofu liquid waste samples decreased significantly after the second day of storage at 4–8 °C.
