This study presents peer-to-peer (P2P) energy transaction mechanisms to maximize social welfare considering the uncertainty and profit fairness of the players. The P2P energy transaction problem is formulated as a P2P energy transaction pair matching and the determination of the P2P transaction price. To solve the problem, the optimal condition to maximize social welfare is determined using stochastic P2P energy transaction performance analysis based on the uncertainty characteristics. The analysis results show that social welfare is maximized to match the producer and consumer pairs that have similar demand characteristics; the P2P transaction price balances the profit fairness between the pair. Using these results, two centralized P2P energy transaction mechanisms are proposed by modifying the optimization problem. Moreover, a decentralized P2P energy transaction mechanism that operates in a distributed manner is suggested with the operational signal flow for the implementation of the mechanism. The simulation results show that the centralized and decentralized mechanisms have near optimal performance, with less than a 0.5% and 1% optimal gap compared to the optimal solution that requires perfect information including uncertainty, respectively. However, the decentralized mechanism is less computationally complex and uses less information than the centralized mechanisms; consequently, it can alleviate the operational burden and security and privacy problems. In addition, the results show that the performance of P2P energy transaction is related to the relative demand ratio between the producer and consumer. The optimal condition and results suggest a guide to the design of the P2P energy transaction. The decentralization of the large-scale energy sector, its replacement with pro-ecological, dispersed production sources and building a citizen dimension of the energy sector are the directional objectives of the energy transformation in the European Union. Building energy self-sufficiency at a local level is possible, based on the so-called Energy Communities, which include energy clusters and energy cooperatives. Several dozen pilot projects for energy clusters have been implemented in Poland, while energy cooperatives, despite being legally sanctioned and potentially a simpler formula of operation, have not functioned in practice. This article presents the coopetitive nature of Energy Communities. The authors analysed the principles and benefits of creating Energy Communities from a regulatory and practical side. An important element of the analysis is to indicate the managerial, coopetitive nature of the strategies implemented within the Energy Communities. Their members, while operating in a competitive environment, simultaneously cooperate to achieve common benefits. On the basis of the actual data of recipients and producers, the results of simulations of benefits in the economic dimension will be presented, proving the thesis of the legitimacy of creating coopetitive structures of Energy Communities.

Demand Response Model Development for Smart Households Using Time of Use Tariffs and Optimal Control—The Isle of Wight Energy Autonomous Community Case Study

Residential variable energy price schemes can be made more effective with the use of a demand response (DR) strategy along with smart appliances. Using DR, the electricity bill of participating customers/households can be minimised, while pursuing other aims such as demand-shifting and maximising consumption of locally generated renewable-electricity. In this article, a two-stage optimization method is used to implement a price-based implicit DR scheme. The model considers a range of novel smart devices/technologies/schemes, connected to smart-meters and a local DR-Controller. A case study with various decarbonisation scenarios is used to analyse the effects of deploying the proposed DR-scheme in households located in the west area of the Isle of Wight (Southern United Kingdom). There are approximately 15,000 households, of which 3000 are not connected to the gas-network. Using a distribution network model along with a load flow software-tool, the secondary voltages and apparent-power through transformers at the relevant substations are computed. The results show that in summer, participating households could export up to 6.4 MW of power, which is 10% of installed large-scale photovoltaics (PV) capacity on the island. Average carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) reductions of 7.1 ktons/annum and a reduction in combined energy/transport fuel-bills of 60%/annum could be achieved by participating households.
