Plankton diversity and limnological characterization in two shallow tropical urban reservoirs of Pernambuco State, Brazil

Abstract: Plankton diversity, physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a were analyzed in two shallow urban reservoirs with different trophic degrees on Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. High eutrophication levels were observed in Apipucos reservoir, while Prata reservoir was considered oligotrophic. Values reported for physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a differed among the studied ecosystems. Richness and plankton diversity were higher in Apipucos reservoir especially for phytoplankton. The pr… Show more

“…Thus, this community is not well studied and thus little understood. Therefore, assess this community is important to understand its structure and dynamics, particularly in semi-arid region where drought and rain are a key factor in the hydrological dynamics and ecological processes (Almeida et al, 2012;Eskinazi-Sant'Anna et al, 2013).…”

“…In this hypereutrophic reservoir (Almeida et al . ), the aquaculture activity is based in fish culture in net‐tanks or cage farms developed since 2004. Besides, in 1998, before the introduction of these aquaculture systems, the Saco reservoir was already considered as hypereutrophic (Bouvy et al .…”

“…); however, the knowledge of planktonic rotifers in the semiarid region is virtually non‐existent, consisting mostly of temporal and restricted studies, even this region occupying more than 85% of the territory of the north‐east of Brazil. We hypothesized that the ecological attributes (composition, abundance, diversity and trophic groups) of the rotifer community from a Neotropical hypereutrophic semiarid reservoir (Bouvy, Pagano & Troussellier ; Almeida, Melão & Moura ) are different when considering the associated fish‐farming systems, which could both be affected by different management. We believe that these ecological attributes can be altered by increased nutrient input from aquaculture.…”
