Placental Chorioangioma: A Case Report

Abstract: Chorioangioma constitutes the commonest benign growth of placenta. It consists of a benign angioma arising from chorionic tissue. Chorioangioma of the placenta most often goes unnoticed. With the advent of gray scale and color flow ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis these tumours can be easily detected antenatally. It has potentially serious fetal risks and so the pregnancy needs to have regular surveillance. The larger the size of the tumor the more is the chance of developing complications. We present a c… Show more

“…Chorangioma occurs on the fetal side of the placenta close to the insertion of the cord and is perfused by the fetal circulation 3 . Histologically there are three types namely cellular, vascular and degenerative, the vascular type being the commonest 2 .…”

“…Diagnosis is mainly based on ultrasonic demonstration of a hypo-and hyper-echoic mass protruding from the placenta to the amniotic cavity 2 . Differential diagnoses include placental haematoma, partial hydatiform mole, submucosal uterine fibroid, and placental teratoma.…”

“…[3,5] Preterm labor, hemolytic anemia, foetal cardiomegaly, foetal thrombocytopenia, intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, placenta abruption, and congenital abnormalities are all possible complications. [4,6] They are often misdiagnosed as blood clots, deteriorated myomas, and placental teratomas.…”

“…It was first described by Clarke in the year 1978 [2]. With the advent of color Doppler, these can be easily detected antenatally [2]. On ultrasound, they appear as a well circumscribed, rounded, predominantly hypoechoic lesion near the chorionic surface, protruding into the amniotic cavity [1.].…”
