PurposeThis study aims to investigate two festivals that are held annually in Hong Kong, to explore the essence of festival meanings – the extent to which the perceived sociocultural benefits of festivals articulate the production of a sense of place (SOP) and its respective locality.Design/methodology/approachThe study utilises a comparative analysis approach to examine visitors’ views of the festivals. It constructs a theoretical framework of the interaction mechanism between tourism and place evolution by relying largely on the notion of place as the centre of meanings. Data sources include interview, questionnaire, observation and a literature review.FindingsThe findings suggest festival meanings are crucial elements in fostering SOP and shaping the identification of place uniqueness. Being part of local tradition and tourism resource, festival representations are not only passive reflections of prevailing cultural values drawn from current stereotypes and images, but they also play a prominent role in shaping values, behaviours and identities by contributing to the socialisation process. Cultural regeneration through festivals may ultimately contribute to the ontological construction of a place.Research limitations/implicationsGiven the unknown profile of the participants to both festivals, this study employed a convenience sampling method which might have limited the power of generalising the research outcome to other festivals. Besides, this study overlooked the potential differences (or lack of difference) in perceptions of the local residents who visited both festivals for the first time and other residents. Future studies may consider other aspects of festivals and place conceptions widely used in the tourism research field, to validate whether additional insights or hidden festival-to-place relationships can be found in the process of hosting and promoting festivals.Originality/valueThe existing studies of tourism–place relationship, especially those repelling scientific-positivist methodological paradigm, tend to overemphasise the role of tourism in unmaking places. In contrast, the interrogation of island festivals as the centre of meaning offers an alternative perspective to highlight the process that tourism dialectically contributes to place evolution. Tourism unmakes places while possessing a dialectic role of making places.

As many low-income families moved to Cairo in search of better living and work possibilities, the number of informal housing units grew, compelling authorities to start establishing low-income residential neighborhoods within the city. The stakeholders were so eager to meet this demand that they neglected the population's social and psychological needs, especially children. Children raised in societies that propagate lawlessness and moral deterioration, like El-Salam City in northern Cairo, instead of becoming the nation's building blocks. Children living in low-income neighborhoods will be interviewed about their connection with the urban street environment. That is, it looks at individual or environmental factors that children perceive as affecting their social and emotional well-being. Indeed, the results found that there is a correlation between children's socio-emotional wellbeing and the street as a place. So, the study recommended that collaborating with urban planners, sociologists, and local governments is crucial to improving children's well-being in their residential communities.

Kegiatan produktif seperti bekerja dan belajar dewasa ini mengalami perubahan. Dalam dunia pendidikan, belajar mandiri memiliki peran penting sebagai inti dari proses belajar sehingga membutuhkan ruang-ruang lain di luar ruang formal. Perubahan kecenderungan juga terjadi dalam dunia kerja seperti bekerja yang dapat dilakukan tanpa terikat dengan tempat dan waktu. Kecenderungan tersebut memunculkan kebutuhan yang lebih besar terhadap tempat bekerja dan belajar. Penelitian ini merupakan studi awal untuk melihat preferensi tempat bekerja dan belajar. Preferensi tersebut penting untuk dilihat oleh arsitek sebagai dasar dalam menyediakan tempat bekerja dan belajar yang baik. Penelitian dilakukan secara kualitatif dengan metode grounded theory. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menyebarkan kuesioner daring kepada responden (N=108). Selanjutnya, data diolah dengan open coding, axial coding, dan selective coding. Dari analisis yang dilakukan, ditemukan bahwa terdapat empat kelompok preferensi tempat bekerja dan belajar yakni kelompok formal, rekreatif, kondusif, dan personal. Arsitek dapat merancang ruang bekerja dan belajar dengan melihat karakteristik dari kelompok yang akan diwadahi berdasarkan keempat kelompok preferensi tersebut. Penelitian lanjutan sangat diperlukan untuk mengkonfirmasi temuan yang ada sehingga menguatkan teori yang muncul tentang empat kelompok preferensi tempat bekerja dan belajar. Working and learning are two productive activities that are evolving. Independent learning is an essential part of the educational process that necessitates alternative venues outside the official classroom. Trends shift in the workplace, where work can be done without location or time constraints. This disposition has a stronger desire to work and learn. This study offers a preliminary look at people's preferences for working and learning spaces. These preferences are fundamental for architects when designing a healthy work and study environment—choosing the grounded theory method to produce qualitative research. First, respondents (N = 108) received an online questionnaire to fill out. Then, the data processing process uses open, axial, and selective coding. According to the findings, there are four types of virtual working and learning settings: formal, recreational, conducive, and personal. Architects may create working and learning environments that consider the unique characteristics of the various groups that will be accommodated based on the four preferences groups. Further research is needed to validate the findings—study options—to improve the hypothesis surrounding the four categories of work and study options.
